A truly great performance today saw United win out 2 – 0 away to Omonia Green in the Red Division.

After a string of lack-lustre performances in the league, the prospect of playing away at Omonia with three key squad members missing was not something we were relishing.

That said, the boys turned in an inspirational performance against a team that consistently finish in the top ranks of the league and have again earned some great results this season.

Our two goals were both scored on the break, the first by James and the second, a near carbon copy, from Adam. Both involved the boys driving forwards from the half way line and finished with assured strikes from the edge of the box.

To say that we played on the break would not be a fair characterisation as today we gave as good as we got in all departments and shared much of the possession against yet another physical side.

What seemed to come together this week was a few things that we have all been working with the boys on. Firstly, they did not allow Omonia to muscle them out of the game, at times giving as hard as they got. Secondly, we stopped giving the ball away cheaply and at times played some great passing moves through the opposition team. Thirdly, we finally started to use the off-side rule to our advantage, moving far up the pitch as a unit to break down there attacks swiftly. Lastly, we played with 100% commitment, picking up several knocks along the way (we may need another can of Koolpack deep freeze spray!) but focussing on the task at hand and running all the way to the final whistle.

A first clean sheet in the league this season is just icing on the cake.

Picking a man-of-the-match was an unenviable task for the management as each and every boy earned his stripes today, so we bottled it, but Ollie awarded next week’s Captains armband to Adam.
